According to the contemporary definition, the characteristic feature of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) is irreversible or not fully reversible limitation of bronchial airflow. This
limitation is usually progressive and results from incorrect, inflammatory response of the lungs to
noxious particles or gases. COPD is becoming one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in
the whole world. The crucial etiopathological factor of COPD is tobacco smoking. However, this
addiction is not the only cause, as not all smokers develop the clinical manifestation of the disease.
Otherfactors, environmental and genetic (e.g. a^antitrypsin deficiency) may play an important role in
it (8).
